The air is warm. Golden sunlight filters through the emerald-green leaves of the trees to light the path you're riding along. It is a strange forest your quest for your father has brought you to. The last time you saw anyone was when you passed the king's caravan at the edge of the forest several days back. One of the king's men warned you against going through the forest. But it is the quickest route and your quest has already taken you to many strange places.
Your father left when you were a small child. The few memories you have of him have grown fuzzy with time, but you remember the day that he left. He stood in the door of your family's cottage with a traveling bag over his shoulder. "Come here, child," he said to you. You went, and he placed a small stone pendant around your neck. "May this guide and protect you," he said, "As it has done for me." He was gone after that.(click: "pendant")[
At first glance the pendant is nothing more than a simple chunk of stone. When seen under the light of the moon, however, it shines like crystal, and you've seen strange runes floating just under the surface.]
(live:8s)[The path turns sharply and you are drawn from your thoughts to find yourself in front of an enormous metal gate set into a stone arch. A stone wall stretches out from either side of the gate. The gate is unlocked, but the path beyond is shrouded in mist.

The mist clears, and you see a wall of rocks in front of you, stretching as far into the sky as you can see.
"If you wish to enter my house, you must first solve my riddle," the voice says.
"My house is not for faint of heart,
As most who enter perish,
In truth I must suggest the gate,
If your life you cherish,
Those who wish to mimic birds,
A careful path must tread,
For those who cannot find the ledge,

If it's treasure you doth seek,
Of fame, fortune, or wealth,

A prize worth more than a thousand gems,

"I want to go back," you say.
"Then I will send you back to where you came from," Kathrina says. She pulls a small flute from the pocket of her smock and begins to play. Pine needles fall from the trees and begin to circle you, quickly gaining speed. Kathrina smiles at you through the cloud of needles. Strands of light burst from the tip of the flute and mingle with light shooting from your pendant. Within moments the light surrounds you and you see nothing but white.

Kathrina blinks at you for a moment, then grabs the hand you hold out to her. Strands of light burst from the tip of the flute and mingle with light shooting from your pendant. Within moments the light surrounds you and you see nothing but white.

You decide to leave Kathrina here. After all, you don't really know if she wants to leave. Strands of light burst from the tip of the flute and mingle with light shooting from your pendant. Within moments the light surrounds you and you see nothing but white.

"I'd like to live here," you say. Kathrina smiles and laughs, spinning around and around. You smile back, this is the sort of adventure you wanted.
You spend the rest of your days in the fairy forest, traveling through the trees with Kathrina and meeting many new friends. You never found your father, but you find that it no longer matters. You are happy.

"Could I stay here?" you ask. Kathrina looks at you, a light of confusion on her face.
"I do not know," she finally says. "No traveler has asked this before."
"So it's possible then?" you say.
"I suppose it couldn't hurt," Kathrina says. "You could join me in guiding travelers on their journeys." You smile. The sound of the waves is calming and peaceful.
"Then that is what I want to do," you say.
"In that case," Kathrina says, standing next to you looking out to sea, "Welcome home."

"What is this place," you ask. "I thought I was in the wizard's house."
Kathrina smiles gently. "You are still within the wizard's house, in a sense. Each door is a portal, the pendant you wear is the key."
"My pendant?" You glance down at the stone pendant hanging across your chest. Kathrina nods and turns to look at the sea once more. "Do you live in the wizard's house?" you ask her.
"I was brought here many years ago, when I was still an infant," Kathrina says. "Now I live on this beach, directing travelers onward." She falls quiet again. The two of you stand in companionable silence for a while. "So," she finally says, "Why are you here?"
"I am searching for my father," you tell her.
"Why?" she asks.

"I was brought here many years ago, when I was still an infant," Kathrina says. "I was very ill. But the wizard healed me. Now I live here, guiding travelers on their way." She stops spinning at looks off into the forest, her smile fading momentarily. "The travelers are fun, but they never stay long." She is quiet for a moment. Suddenly, she grins and breaks into a little dance. "What brings you here?" she asks.
You do not answer right away, startled as you are by her question. "I am searching for my father," you say.
"Why?" she asks.
